The IDF spokesman discloses that an officer and soldier were killed and 7 injured in coordinated Hizballah rocket and mortar attacks from Mt. Dov (Shabaa Farms) on an Israeli command patrol vehicle near the border Wednesday, Jan. 28.  debkafile: The vehicle was not armored. The pro-Iranian Hizballah claimed the attack. Israel deployed artillery and aircraft to hit back at Hizballah and allied targets in South Lebanon. A major military clash ensued. debkafile: Israel is resolved to ward off any Iranian-Hizballah plans for a war of attrition.

The crash of a drone in the White House grounds Sunday night, Jan. 25, showed that someone in the US secret service and intelligence community had fallen down on the task of guarding America’s highest national symbols. What should have been installed by 2015 – and was not – is an electromagnetic perimeter fence. Its jammers would, by emitting “white noise,” block off the communications links and command and control capacities of the smartphones and unmanned aerial vehicles serving a would-be assailant planning an attack by a tiny, armed drone.

Moscow is to sell Iran its most advanced S-400 as well as the disputed S-300 defensive systems under the military cooperation pact signed in Tehran Tuesday, Jan. 20, by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Brig. Gen. Hossein, his Iranian counterpart. Egypt, Syria and the Lebanese Shiite Hizballah will also receive Russian S-300 missiles. debkafile: Moscow began sending S-300 components to Iran and Syria two years ago, in advance of the full systems which were also promised to Hizballah. So Israel faces partial encirclement by the most advanced Russian defensive missiles from the north, south and east.

Lebanese and Western sources reveal that the two missiles fired Sunday, Jan. 18, by Israeli helicopters at an armed military convoy on the Syrian side of the Golan struck a group of Iranian and Hizballah officers near Quneitra. Five Hizballah officers were killed, including Jihad Mughniyeh son of the Shiite terrorist movement’s military chief, whom Israel killed in 2008, and an Iranian commander. debkafile: The group was inspecting a site for deploying a Hizballah force integrated in Syria’s surface missile deployment opposite Israel’s Golan lines.

Four hostages held by Islamist gunmen at a Jewish grocery store in Paris were reported dead Friday, Jan. 9 by French police, shortly after a rescue operation that killed the gunman, Amedy Coulibaly, who earlier shot dead a policewoman. Other captives were set free. Minutes before, Said and Cherif Kouachi died in a shooting attack on the police siege force at a factory near Dammartin-en-Goelle, 40 km northeast of Paris. The two Charlie Hebdo killers were holed up there threatening to “die as martyrs” with their hostage before going on the offensive.
