DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis Aug 23, 2014, 6:20 PM (IDT)

President Barack Obama must take into account that a decision to extend US military action against the Islamic State to Syria would have the effect of rescuing Bashar Assad’s rule in Damascus from the Islamist peril and strengthening the presence of his Hizballah and Iranian allies in Damascus. debkafile: Israel's and Jordan's security would also be affected. Considering Egyptian President Abdel-Fatteh El-Sisi’s recent undercover contacts with Assad, a US decision may also tilt his calculus about hosting diplomacy on the Gaza conflict

Hamas executed 18 Palestinians as Israel informers Friday, Aug. 22 – shooting eleven at a police station in Gaza City and seven publicly outside the city’s central mosque. This method was seemingly counseled by Iranian and Hizballah advisers to deter Israel from further targeted liquidations of Hamas’ military chiefs. The gruesome images from Gaza ought to have dispelled Egyptian and Israeli illusions that Hamas, any more than the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, seeks a political solution of the Gaza conflict. What these Palestinian extremists want is a bloodbath.

Binyamin Netanyahu talks tough at cabinet session
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report Aug 18, 2014

A narrow, or partial, accord between Israel and Hamas was initialed in Cairo Monday, Aug. 18, say Palestinian sources. Israel does not confirm this. Hamas reportedly agreed not to resume rocket fire when the latest ceasefire  ran out at midnight, while Egypt and Israel said to have consented to reopen their border crossings for the delivery to the Gaza Strip of humanitarian assistance. The issue of demilitarization was left till later. Thursday, Mahmoud Abbas is due to discuss with Khaled Meshaal in Qatar the start of Palestinian Authority operations in Gaza.

DEBKAfile DEBKAfile Special Guide Aug 15, 2014

After a month of fighting in Gaza and the onset of another surreal ceasefire, debkafile’s sources clue in those readers who are understandably a bit baffled about the war and where Israel stands: Although a five-day ceasefire was announced in Cairo Wednesday night, neither Israel nor Hamas had by Friday, Aug. 15, officially acknowledged a truce is in place. Obama and Netanyahu continue to lock horns as Jerusalem runs the war without Washington’s input. As for the conflict's end, every effort at diplomacy with the Hamas terrorists has so far fallen flat.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis Aug 11, 2014

The Kurdish Peshmerga fight against Islamic State terrorists broadened out Monday, Aug. 11, with the US arms airlift to the semiautonomous Iraqi Kurdish capital, Irbil, of large quantities of military hardware from the Mafraq King Hussein Air Base in Jordan and US emergency stores in the Israeli Negev. The US will soon run out of air strike targets without fielding special forces on the ground to mark them. debkafile reveals: Al Qaeda in Sinai reinforced by IS fired rockets at US and Israeli Negev bases in support of Hamas’ war on Israel.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis Aug 9, 2014

While different in many ways, the campaigns waged by the US in northern Iraq against Al Qaeda’s IS, and by Israel in Gaza against Hamas, share common features. President Obama won’t put US special forces back in Iraq and, for very different reasons, Israeli leaders abstained from sending special forces deep inside the Gaza Strip to eliminate the Hamas high command and its main rocket stocks. Both have fallen into the same error of relying on air strikes to eliminate Islamist fundamentalists on the march. And so neither conflict will end soon.
