The so-called “Abdal cell” was accused of plotting hostile acts against Kuwait after guns and explosives were discovered in some of the homes of the 25 Shiites and one Iranian accused in 2015, during sectarian tensions. They were also accused of spying for and working with Iran and the Lebanese Hizballah. One was sentenced to death, the rest to prison terms. At least 14 were sentenced in absentia, including the Iranian national. Tehran has denied any involvement in the case.
