Avigdor Lieberman, chairman of the Knesset foreign affairs committee, said Sunday that Israeli-Palestinian diplomacy at this time should be restricted to economic and security cooperation. The Palestinian Authority, which whips up anti-Semitic hate among its own people and anti-Israel propaganda abroad, is not the right partner for constructive negotiations on a political settlement. The climate it generates provides the impetus for the Palestinian terrorist attacks in the last month, Lieberman said, and the current round of talks will reach the same dead end as former rounds.
Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas denied that the US-initiated negotiations with Israel were at an impasse. In an interview to German TV Saturday night, Abbas said there was still time for progress.
