To avert a potential crisis in relations with Jordan, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office Tuesday sent a message of regret for the death of Raed Zueter, a Jordanian judge, in a clash with Israeli soldiers at the Allenby border terminal Sunday. The PMO also extended condolences to the Jordanian people and parliament. The message did not refer to the findings of the preliminary Shin Bet-police investigation, based on the testimony of dozens of witnesses, which showed that Zueter ran at an Israeli soldier screaming "Allah hu Akbar" and tried to snatch his sidearm. The soldiers, feeling threatened, shot at his legs. Zueter then set about striking the soldier with an iron bar, at which point they fired the shots that caused his death. The IDF will continue to investigate the incident.
