US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter:The nuclear option is on the table
Obama still believes in a nuclear deal, although Iran is skittish - even against a military option
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis April 12, 2015

The Obama administration is swinging between conflicting signals on the Iranian nuclear deal. In the face of tough conditions laid down by Tehran, the US president said in Panama Sunday, April 12: “Iran has it own politics and “hardliners” who need to be satisfied, but “there may be ways to structure the final nuclear deal that achieve core objectives while satisfying Iran’s pride.” Just Saturday, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said: “We have the capability to shut down, set back and destroy the Iranian nuclear program.” This confusion is useful fodder for Tehran.

Obama to Israel: Nuclear deal with Iran is “our best bet” – but “we’ve got your backs”
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis April 6, 2015

“If anyone messes with Israel, America will be there.” This conciliatory message was issued by US President Barack Obama in a New York Times interview Monday, April 6. In it, he urged Israel to accept the nuclear deal as the “best bet” and rely on America to “have its back” against Iranian or any other hostility. debkafile: This message, though important, does not cover Iranian’s ongoing aggressive drive for regional expansion by conventional military means backed by terror, or loosen the noose Iran is already tightening around Israel’s borders.

John Kerry takes a break from the Lausanne talks
Khamenei to Zarif: Don’t sign! Obama to Kerry: Make them sign! Gridlock
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis April 2, 2015

Up until Thursday, April 2, the American and Iranian negotiators seemed locked in a mighty battle over the pace of sanctions relief, research and development, international inspections and the quantity of low-enriched uranium retained by Iran after shipping its stockpile overseas. But the real gridlock is over procedure: President Barack insists on a signed deal however long it takes, while the Iranian team is bound by the supreme leader’s directive to reject the two-stage process, only the one to be completed by June and include the removal of all sanctions.

Obama and Kerry hash over nuclear deal with Iran
US surrender on breakout time to a bomb leads to breakthrough on a nuclear deal
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 29, 2015

President Barack Obama and John Kerry promised that the nuclear deal to be signed with Iran in Switzerland this week would give the world powers a year’s warning from the Islamic Republic’s break out to an operational weapon. debkafile: To clinch the framework deal in Lausanne, even this concession, which imperils Israel, the Gulf and the Middle East at large, was not enough. The president authorized the US delegation to fall back again and cut the space granted the world powers for reaction to breakthrough from a year to six or seven months:

Iranian general in Sanaa to organize Yemen rebel counter-offensive for Saudi-led attacks
DEBKAfile Special Report March 28, 2015

Iran’s top war commander, Al Qods Brigades chief Gen. Qassem Soleimani, landed in Sanaa Friday, March 27, debkafile reports, to organize a counter-offensive for the Saudi-Gulf-Egyptian operations against Tehran-backed Houthi rebel advances. By opening its third direct Middle East warfront after Syria and Iraq, Tehran was holding the Obama administration to its promise of support as the leading Middle East power, in return for signing a nuclear framework deal by March 31. Solemeini’s must urgently restore Iran’s sea and air supply lines to Yemen, cut off by Saudi-led air strikes.

Egypt seizes Bab el Mandeb ahead of Iran. Saudis bomb Iran-backed Yemeni Houthis. US launches air strikes over Tikrit
DEBKAfile Special Report March 26, 2015

In a surprise step, Egyptian forces Thursday morning, March 26, seized control of the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Straits to pre-empt Tehran’s grab for this important energy shipping gateway between the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Suez Canal, debkafile reports. It rounded off the just-launched Saudi-led air strikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, signaling a 10-nation Sunni Arab revolt against Iran’s approaching takeover of Yemen and other Mid East positions with Washington’s support, and coinciding with the first US air strikes over Tikrit in aid of Iran.

Shiite militias shoot rockets against ISIS in Tikrit
Iran-led forces are worsted in Tikrit in Tehran’s first battlefield encounter with ISIS
DEBKAfile Special Report March 25, 2015

The offensive launched by the Iraqi army and Iranian-led Shiite militias to capture Sunni Tikrit from the Islamic State has been thrown back - despite rosy coalition assessments. The fighting died down because the casualties ISIS inflicted on the mixed force and its Iranian officers were too heavy to bear and continue fighting. Complete Iraqi units fled in disarray. This outcome hangs a big question mark over the US tactic of relying for ground warfare against ISIS on local forces under Iranian command. Legendary Al Qods chief Gen. Qassem Soleimani faces hard questions.

New US “allegation”: Israel spied on closed-door nuclear talks, passed secrets to Congress
DEBKAfile Special Report March 24, 2015

Yet another Obama administration thrust in its campaign to stigmatize Binyamin Netanyahu and Israel came Tuesday, March 24, as a pejorative leak to The Wall Street Journal, which reported: “Israeli intelligence was eavesdropping on closed-door nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US, then passing the classified information along to the US Congress." debkafile: The WSJ story means that the Obama administration failed to keep its promise to update Israel about the nuclear talks with Iran, and so Israel needed to activate spies to learn about US concessions.

France balks at the US-Iranian deal on five counts – not least with an eye on its Gulf ties
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis March 21, 2015

President Barack Obama failed to shift French President France Hollande from his objections to the nuclear accord taking shape between the US and Iran in the call he put through to the Elysée Friday night, March 30. US Secretary of State John Kerry fared no better Saturday, when he met the British, French and German Foreign ministers in London to line the Europeans up behind the American position. Germany balked too. France wants Tehran first to account for evidence of past development work on a nuclear warhead design. Tehran will never admit this.

Herzog’s four pledges for his first 100 days as prime minister are unworkable
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis March 14, 2015

Yitzhak Herzog, co-leader of the opposition Zionist Camp party, is tabbed by the polls as Binyamin Netanyahu’s credible successor. However, the same credibility does not extend to his four pledges to the voter ahead of the March 17 election - though sincere. If elected, Herzog vowed in his first 100 days as prime minister to lead the campaign to bring down the prohibitive cost of housing; mend Israel’s relations with the United States, i.e. Barack Obama; revive peace talks with the Palestinians; and create a “regional platform” for Israel’s foreign relations.
