They shot 14 people dead and injured 21 at the San Bernardino social center in California, before dying themselves in a shootout with the police. Friday, Dec. 4, the FBI confirmed that the attack was being investigated as “an act of terrorism” and revealed Farook was in touch with a “known terrorist contact." He must therefore have been on a watch list. So why was the attack not caught in time?

Interpol sharply reprimanded Kuala Lumpur security for failing to check its lists of stolen and lost passports against passengers’ documents. The FBI has found no signs of an explosion in the vicinity of the lost airliner. The cause of the crash remains baffling.

Two are in police hands – one of them with badly burned hands in hospital – a third is on the run.
