DEBKAfile Special Report May 26, 2014
Hizballah chief Hassan Nasrallah in his latest speech Sunday night, May 25, accused the IDF in unusual detail of providing anti-Assad rebels fighting in South Syria and Golan with added firepower. A Western military source told debkafile: “When the senior strategist of a military group shows off his intelligence, that is a declaration of war.” Nasrallah also accused Israel of violent incursions into southern Lebanon, saying, “Until now we haven’t reacted.” But next time “we’ll hit back at once.” Israel’s military chiefs treat this as a Hizballah threat of a dual-front war from Lebanon and Syria.

DEBKAfile Special Report May 1, 2014
A Facebook campaign expressing support for a soldier filmed pointing a cocked gun at a young Palestinian during an altercation in the West Bank is growing in strength. The IDF is powerless to stop its soldiers’ online actions, and the flurry of publicity surrounding “David the Nahal soldier” is beginning to steer the country’s political narrative out of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s control. As the protest gathers more “likes,” various politicians and media figureheads are eager to get in on the act and exploit it for their own ends.
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report April 9, 2014
The Syrian army’s 90th Brigade’s loss of the forward Tel Al-Ahmar Golan position to rebel forces including al Qaeda’s Nusra Front was Bashar Assad’s most humiliating military setback in the past year. Situated on the Israeli border, that position commands the Golan town of Quneitra opposite the Israeli army. Determined to recover it, Assad has mustered a Syrian-Hizballah-Iraqi Shiite expeditionary force. Israel will have to decide how to deal with violations of the Golan demilitarized zone if the Syrian army uses heavy armor and mounts air strikes against the rebels.
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 27, 2014
Israel has set up new IDF formations for combating potential terrorist incursions from three al Qaeda-ruled areas adjoining its borders, while also planning to use drones.
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 20, 2014
The presumption is gaining ground in Israel that the bombing attack on an Israeli Golan position Tuesday, March 18, injuring four paratroops, may not have been the work of Hizballah, but of al Qaeda’s Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant–ISIS, which is revealed now to have to have infiltrated the Syrian Golan. debkafile reports two more disturbing developments: ISIS Sinai cells are plotting a big coordinated operation against Egypt and Israel; and Syrian military intelligence is arming and funding Iraqi al Qaeda – both to crush the Nusra front and hit Israel on the Golan.
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis March 19, 2014
That Israel has no answer for attacks from Syrian territory was apparent from its response to the bombing Tuesday, March 18 of the Golan Post 104, which injured four paratroopers – one seriously - the fourth such attack this month. Artillery and rockets were directed at a Syrian army post near Quneitra followed by air strikes. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon held the Assad regime responsible.debkafile: Holding a sovereign state responsible for terrorist action from its soil never worked in Gaza and will only lead to a war of attrition in the north.
DEBKAfile Special Report March 7, 2014
Israel’s seizure of the Iranian missile ship KLOS C Wednesday, March 6, was the second time the IDF had poked a finger in the eye of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, head of the al Qods Brigades, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ intelligence-cum-terrorist arm. The first was the Israeli air strike on Feb. 24 on Hizballah’s arms convoys and missiles on the Lebanese-Syrian border. debkafile: Gen. Soleimani was quick to set up low-key yet ominous reprisals within days of Israel’s air strike and may well come up with payback for the ship’s seizure.
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report February 19, 2014
Israel’s top leaders marked the second round of nuclear talks between the Six Powers and Iran with a visit Tuesday, Feb. 18, to injured Syrians at the IDF field hospital in central Golan. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said: “I would like to tell the world today that Iran has changed neither its aggressive policy nor its brutal character…” debkafile: The IDF has thrown up a new dual bulwark on both sides of the Syrian border, including the new Bashan territorial division complete with a high-tech combat intelligence collection battalion.
Israeli officer: With 30,000 Al Qaeda fighters in Syria, Israel re-evaluates its neutrality in civil war
DEBKAfile Special Report January 25, 2014
In a special briefing to foreign correspondents Friday, Jan. 24, a high-ranking Israeli intelligence officer reported that Israel is discussing rethinking its strategy of neutrality in the Syrian civil war following the buildup of more than 30,000 al Qaeda-linked fighters there. Many are massed closed to its borders and openly threaten to turn their sights on Israel after toppling Assad. debkafile: To fight this terrorist army, the IDF would have to study US combat tactics in Afghanistan, rewrite its war doctrine and build large commando units for protracted warfare.
Heavily armed militias wrest control of West Bank Palestinian refugee camps from Palestinian Authority
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report January 7, 2014
The rising level of Palestinian terrorism must be attributed largely to the 19 West Bank refugee camps falling into the hands of local armed militias run by a mix of terrorists, crime mobs and arms racketeers, who command big arsenals of illegal weapons, debkafile reports. The close to quarter of-a-million Palestinians living in those camps have veered out of the control of Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas and its security services. The militias’ sway is spilling over into the big Palestinian towns and the Palestinian neighborhoods of E. Jerusalem.
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 25, 2013
Surrendering to Palestinian opposition, Secretary of State John Kerry has stepped back from the US security plan for Israeli troops to guard the Jordan Valley border - in favor of US forces, debkafile reports: The Palestinians won’t grant Israeli West Bank corridors for access to the Jordan Valley. The US agrees to an express train link between the West Bank and Gaza under Palestinian control across the Israeli Negev - with no access to Israeli monitors. Still, Israel’s response to Palestinian terrorism remains low key to avoid upsetting the talks.
DEBKAfile Special Report December 16, 2013
Israel appeared ready to accept the Lebanese explanation that a member of its armed forces acted on his own initiative and “did not consult his station" before shooting to kill Israeli Navy Master Sgt. Shlomi Cohen, 31, Sunday, Dec. 16. At the UNIFIL inquiry they attended Monday with Israeli liaison officers, the Lebanese called it a one-time incident. debkafile: This did not answer the questions surrounding the attack, the second in three days. However, the US, France and the UN leaned heavily on Jerusalem to de-escalate the incident.
Israeli defense minister with top generals could have been hit by the bomb trap which injured five soldiers
DEBKAfile Special Report November 1, 2013
A Hamas bomb trap was planted in the tunnel discovered last month running from Khan Younes in the Gaza Strip to Kibbutz Ein Hashlosaha. It was triggered when a combat engineering unit came to destroy it Thursday night. Five men were injured, one seriously, including a Lt. Colonel and a major. Four days ago, the tunnel was visited by Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and a group of generals. What if they had run into the same booby-trap? Were they lucky or was it not yet in position?
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis October 20, 2013
In less than a month, Palestinians have committed six acts of terror against Israeli soldiers and civilians and launched a new terror conspiracy against the Israeli population bordering the Gaza Strip. Two soldiers and a reserve colonel were murdered. Yet Israeli spokesmen deny evidence of a “connecting thread” or “a common factor.” debkafile: Hamas is highly visible as one common factor, especially after Ismail Haniya, Gaza prime minister, called on Oct. 19 for a Third Intifada. Instead of denial, the IDF needs to nip this peril in the bud.
DEBKAfile Special Report October 6, 2013
All Saturday night and Sunday morning, Oct. 6, Israeli military forces backed by combat helicopters scoured the West Bank area between El-Bireh and the Jelazun refugee camp north of Bethel, in search of the gunman who shot the 9-year old Israeli girl Noam Glick at close range outside her home in Pesagot. Several Palestinians were injured. This attack was the third case of the Palestinians’ new “lone-wolf” terror tactic, after two soldiers were murdered on the West Bank last month. In Pesagot, the tactic was expanded to civilians.
