Ashura rioters in Tehran
Iran reels toward popular counter-revolution
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis December 28, 2009

debkafile's Iranian sources reveal that Mir Hossein Mousavi's nephew, Ali Habib, was not shot dead during a Tehran demonstration Sunday, Dec. 27, as reported, but waylaid and gunned down as he left his home. Fresh riots followed the disappearance of the body Monday. The episode became even more ominous when Iran's security services chief Gen. Radan accused Mousavi of the murder to incite further violence. The opposition fears that the murder of Mousavi's nephew augurs physical liquidations of its leaders.
Monday, Dec. 28, the authorities prevented the young man's body from leaving the hospital for fear of a mass funeral that would get out of control.
The current upsurge of violence across Iran is the most dangerous yet because for the first time demonstrators are turning round to attack security forces, the Revolutionary Guardsmen and Basijj paramilitaries.
debkafile's Iranian sources report that to fend off the furious masses, whose numbers are swelling into tens of thousands and more, security forces are firing live bullets and tear gas in the crowds.
As for the US and the Europeans, they are seeing proof of the fallaciousness of their policy to refrain from applying undue foreign pressure on Tehran for fear of rallying the Iranian people around the regime.

Too late to stop Tehran, Obama aims to stifle an Israeli attack
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 28, 2009
Maestro Barack Obama's histrionics in New York and Pittsburgh Thursday and Friday, Sept. 24-25 - and his threat of "confrontation" for Iran's concealment of its nuclear capabilities - were water off a duck's back for Tehran, whose nuclear weapons program has gone too far to stop by words or even sanctions.
The Islamic regime only responded with more defiance, announcing that its second uranium enrichment plant near Qom would become operational soon.
He also understands that Iran is now unstoppable except by force. His performance was therefore directed at another target: Israel, whom he is determined to dissuade from resorting to military action against Iran's nuclear installations.
Defense secretary Robert Gates hit the nail on the head when he said Friday: "The reality is there is no military option that does anything more than buy time. The estimates are one to three years or so."
Therefore, according to Gates, diplomacy remained the only viable option, which means Israel like the rest of the world must learn to live with a nuclear-armed Iran.

First Expose of Iran's Seven Hellhole Prisons
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 19, 2009
Until the defeated Iranian presidential contender Mehdi Karroubi broke the wall of silence surrounding the Islamic Republic's prisons to demand an investigation into allegations of rape, little attention was paid to the abuses meted out to protestors who dared to claim that the June 12 election was rigged.
These abuses are inflicted routinely and systematically in seven secret prisons where political detainees are held at the behest of the revolutionary Islamic regime. Those prisons are described debkafile's Iranian sources as inhuman hellholes:
Kahrizak
This is the jail which supreme leader Ayatallah Ali Khamenei wanted razed to the ground to conceal the outrages committed there against scores of reform-seeking protesters who had the cruel fortune to be dumped there. Kahrizak on the southern outskirts of Tehran was notorious as the penal facility for Iran's most violent thugs and gangsters. Those inmates were let loose on the political prisoners who were incarcerated in cells ten meters square. An unknown number suffered rape and bloody beatings, which not all survived.

Netanyahu goes into White House
Obama gives Iran another year's grace for nuclear dialogue
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 19, 2009

US president Barack Obama's tough talk of sanctions has melted into soft soap for luring Iran into further dialogue. Adopting the reverse tactic, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sounds almost reasonable for a change, even as Tehran pushes its revolutionary goals as pugnaciously as ever.
Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu gave the US president another six months for diplomacy up to mid-2010 without the threat of military action when they met at the White House November 9.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 12, 2009

Iran hits back for IAEA censure by launching proxy military action against US, UK
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report December 6, 2009
Reduced Iranian cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency is the least of the troubles Tehran has in store for the West. debkafile's counter-terror sources report that Iran Sunday, Nov. 29, moved toward a military confrontation with the United Sates and Britain when its parliament earmarked $20 million to support "progressive currents which resist US and UK illegal activities." Its next gesture of defiance was the approval of 10 new uranium enrichment installations, with construction on five starting immediately.
Tehran is not waiting idly to be attacked.

Iran tests nuclear site defenses: Stage One a washout
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report November 29, 2009
From the word go on Sunday, Nov. 22, Iran's five-day drill demonstrated that its air force and air defense units were unequal to their mission of keeping the skies over its nuclear sites clear of incoming strike aircraft, debkafile's military and Iranian sources report. In conditions of real war, therefore, Iran's atomic installations would be destroyed in the first hours of an attack.

Denied Russian S-300 missiles, Iran cannot protect nuclear sites
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report November 28, 2009
Iran launches its huge Modafean-e (Defenders) Aseman-e-Velayat air defense exercise Sunday, Nov. 22, to protect its nuclear sites, after failing to persuade Russia to deliver the linchpin of its air defenses, S-300 missiles.
Our sources report that, aside from the Russian-made Tor-M 1 short-range interceptor, Iran's air defense systems are outdated and pretty useless against US stealth bombers or the Israeli air force's electronic jamming instruments.
