Tehran opens Qom enrichment plant to inspection Oct 25 - but hides other facilities
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report October 9, 2009
On Oct. 1, US president Barack Obama gave Tehran two weeks to provide International Atom Energy Agency inspectors with "unfettered access" to its second enrichment facility near Qom as the precondition for a second round of six-power talks with Iran. The IAEA director Mohamed ElBaradei announced Sunday, Oct. 4, that the visit would take place on Oct. 25. He did not use the term "unfettered" or a synonym for good reason: As debkafile has reported, Iran has buried additional secret plants at the Qom underground site.

Iran loses its only AWACS as Ahmadinejad threatens the world
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report October 4, 2009
Up above a big military parade in Tehran on Tuesday, Sept. 22, as Iranian president declared Iran's armed forces would "chop off the hands" of any power daring to attack his country, two air force jets collided in mid-air. One was Iran's only airborne warning and control system (AWACS) for coordinating long-distance aerial operations, debkafile's military and Iranian sources disclose.
The disaster was a serious blow for Iran, leaving its air force and air and missile defenses without "electronic eyes" for surveillance of the skies around its borders.

US president Barack Obama Saturday, Sept. 26, threatened Iran with confrontation over the secrecy surrounding its nuclear capabilities. He did not rule out military options although he preferred diplomacy.

Iran flexes missile muscles, is unfazed by big power demands
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report October 2, 2009
Iran tested two surface-to-surface missiles, the Shehab 3 and Sejil Monday, Sept. 28. In Washington, the administration warned the Six-Power talks opening in Geneva Thursday would demand international inspectors be allowed immediate and full access to personnel who designed and built Iran's underground enrichment plant near Qom. According to debkafile's Iranian sources, Tehran will not only reject the demand but place any discussion of its nuclear activities firmly out of bounds, heartened by the US defense secretary Robert Gates's latest comment and one other new development.

Ahmadinejad's diatribe against US and Israel countered by Russian openness to sanctions<br/>
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report September 27, 2009
The Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinjad's excessive oratory, matched by the shuffle of Western delegations led by the US leaving the UN General Assembly chamber, have been a typical feature of every new UN General Assembly session in the last three years. This time, his attacks on the US and Israel were not less inflammatory, but they were countered by the new Russian willingness to consider sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program in president Dmitry Medvedev's conversation between US president Barack Obama.

The Obama administration might conceivably decide to live with a nuclear-armed Iran. Israel does not enjoy that luxury. The last DEBKA-Net-Weekly issue dealt with this touch-and-go moment.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report September 11, 2009
Barack Obama has been in the White House for nine months and Binyamin Netanyahu in the Israeli prime minister's office six months. Both have spent precious time batting the numbers of settlement apartments to and fro instead of taking resolute steps to thwart Iran's spectacular advances on the road to a nuclear weapon. debkafile's military and intelligence sources note that Tehran has made good use of this time for the longest strides towards its objective than at any time since its program was surreptitiously launched.

President Obama favored losing candidate in Iran's election
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report August 24, 2009
Friday night, June 12, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was already on his way to victory in Iran's turbulent presidential election although only the first votes had been counted. By Saturday morning, it was clear he had won a landslide for a second term, widening the gap with his closest rival opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi. According to final results, the incumbent won 62.6 percent of the vote, Mousavi 33.75 percent.
This contradicted Western predictions that the record-breaking turnout of 85 percent of Iran's 46 million eligible voters favored the challenger.
Yet strangely enough, even then, Washington and the US media were still doggedly insisting that that the reformist Mousavi could still make it in a run-off, although that door had been finally slammed shut by the president's broad majority.
