DEBKAfile Exclusive Report May 9, 2008
debkafile's political sources report that circles closest to Ehud Olmert, prime minister and leader of the Kadima party see little hope of him surviving the political fallout from the new, as-yet unpublished police investigation against him.
Tuesday, May 6, is seen as marking the critical point in the inquiry, after which the police and general prosecution will move quickly to draw up an indictment.
Therfore, our sources do not credit reports that Monday, May 5, visiting US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice leaned hard on Olmert to mark President George W, Bush's May 14 visit with a declaration defining the final frontiers of a Palestinian state acceptable to Israel.

Military authorities leading the campaign against Palestinian terror told debkafile Monday, April 28, that the removal of the permanent roadblock at Asariya a-Shemaliya north of the West Bank town of Nablus lays the entire area including central Israel open to terrorist attacks which that very roadblock had long been a key element in frustrating.
The decision was taken by defense minister Ehud Barak in line with his promise to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to ease Palestinian traffic on the West Bank by reducing the number of roadblocks.

Abbas Goes on the Warpath, Tries to Steal the Show from Hamas
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report April 28, 2008
debkafile publishes here for the first time details of the Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' master plan for wrecking Israel's 60th anniversary celebrations. The project is called the "2008 Return"
Its highlights are disclosed here with debkafile's comments.
The Palestinian leader has circulated guidelines for three million Palestinians to leave their homes on the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon on May 14 and march on Israel's borders, including the Green Line. The march is to take place a week after Israel's Independence Day on May 8, 2008. If Israel obstructs their passage, they will strike camp and live in tents until Israel surrenders and lets them through.
debkafile's Palestinian sources report that Mahmoud Abbas intends to submit his ambitious master plan to the summit of Arab rulers meeting in Damascus March 29.
There is no knowing how much support he will win from Arab governments or whether the different Palestinian communities will rise to his call. The whole plan may simply fold for lack of response - or not. Abbas' main objectives appear to be to upstage the warlike Hamas and throw a wet blanket over Israel's anniversary celebrations.

Analysis: Hamas conducted first armored attack on regular army in terrorist history
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report April 25, 2008
For the third time in 10 days, the Palestinian Hamas demonstrated Saturday, April 19, it was capable of breaking through the Gaza-Israeli border barrier. Two bomb jeeps and one armored personnel carriers were used to ram through to the Israeli side of the Kerem Shalom goods crossing; a second APC was blown up before it reached the border opposite Kibbutz Nirim. The cool heads, speedy response and bravery of the IDF's Bedouin Desert Patrol Battalion and its commanders halted them in their tracks and averted a major catastrophe and more Palestinian kidnappings. Thirteen soldiers were injured.
debkafile's military sources note that Hamas was able to surprise Israeli forces because of the dearth of inside intelligence about Hamas' plans and moves inside the Gaza Strip.

debkafile's military sources hold up Israel's military action in Gaza Friday to illustrate the point made by Gen. Biran.

Palestinians and a Kosovo Pipe Dream
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report April 13, 2008
The proposal by senior Palestinian negotiator Yasser Abed Rabbo put forward Wed Feb. 20 to copy the Kosovo example if Israel continued to mark time in talks for a Palestinian state was quickly knocked down by his colleagues, but eyed with interest by Israel.
Tuesday, prime minister Ehud Olmert and foreign minister Tzipi Livni held another round of negotiations with Palestinian leaders Mahmoud Abbas and Ahmed Qureia.
debkafile's Middle East sources commented: Nothing has stopped the Palestinians from going ahead and declaring the West Bank independent, any more than Hamas was prevented from seizing control of and governing the Gaza Strip.
In fact, if the Kosovo model were seriously applicable to the Palestinians, Israel might profit in three ways.
Palestinian leaders may talk big about creating an independent state but when it comes to the point, their willingness to come out from under the American and Israeli umbrella, leave the gravy train and walk without external crutches is questionable.
Abd Rabbo's colleagues therefore lost no time in disowning his Kosovo vision in case it was accepted. They picked up the comment from some Israeli circles: Let them create another Kosovo; let's see how long they manage to survive on their own.
