Incoming Israeli chief of staff says terrorist military build-up in Gaza calls for rapid and urgent solution
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 31, 2007
At his first appearance before the Knesset foreign affairs and security committee, Wednesday, March 28, Lt.-Gen Gaby Ashkenazi did not specify what solution he had in mind, but it was presumed to be military. The chief of staff declared: What happened in the Lebanon war will not happen to the IDF again.
The general said one of his first priorities in the immediate future is to block the transfer of terrorist weapons and technology from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank.
debkafile's military sources estimate that Ashkenazi may be too late. The technology for the manufacture of missiles and weapons is already located in the West Bank. What remains to be done is to prevent the transfer of sophisticated hardware.

debkafile Analysis: The Hamas-dominated Palestinian government is product of Saudi-Iranian give-and-take over Lebanon and the Palestinians
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 24, 2007
Israel's strategic fiasco is rooted in the Olmert government's failure to pick up warning signals along the road. The outcome is a radicalized Palestinian government, with elements of which many world governments, including the US and Europe, are already keenly offering to work, regardless of the incoming Palestinian prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh's, vow to uphold "all forms of resistance" to the Jewish state.

The official announcement promised the incorporation of lessons drawn from the Lebanon war when more than a million Israeli civilians were blasted by 4,000 Hizballah rockets for 33 days.

Five Qassam missiles were fired from the Gaza Strip, Sunday, March 18, the day the Palestinian unity government was installed
The population of northern Israel is no better protected for the next war than they were for the last, despite the promises the prime minister, defense minister and other cabinet members scattered right and left.

New Palestinian government marks collapse of Israel's Middle East positions
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 18, 2007
The Hamas-Fatah government taking office Sunday, March 18, is more than a policy failure by prime minister Ehud Olmert and foreign minister Tzipi Livni; it is another milestone on the road to the collapse of Israel's Middle East positions at large, on a scale comparable to the setback to its deterrence from the mismanaged war against Hizballah last summer.
This fiasco is reflected in the horrified outcry across the board, from members of the Olmert government coalition and the opposition alike, as Israelis woke up Sunday, March 18, to face a hostile Palestinian government led by a terrorist organization, godfathered by Saudi Arabia, armed by Iran, and blessed by Western powers.
