Israeli military intelligence chief predicts Iran-Hizballah-Syria attack on Israel in summer
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report April 5, 2007
In his briefing to the Israeli cabinet Sunday, April 1, Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin, AMAN chief, reported that Iran, Syria, Hizballah and Hamas expect the United States to attack Iran in the summer and they are preparing to retaliate by going to war with Israel. In Yadlin's view, a proliferation of players and the many imponderables could ignite a conflict, which none of the parties wants - as happened in the Six Day War of 1967.
debkafile analysts note five salient points in Gen. Yadlin's briefing:
1. His comments came one day after Iran's chief of staff, Gen. Hassan Fayrouz Abadi, urged the Arabs to hurry up and join Iran in a defense treaty.

Why Does Tehran Free the Britons But Refuse to Signal the Release of the Three Israeli Servicemen?
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report April 4, 2007
Iran, which captured and freed the British sailors and marines, also has the authority to weigh in for the Israeli captives' release with its Lebanese proxy and the Hamas-led group of Popular Resistance Committees and al Qaeda Falastin in Gaza. It is in Iran's power to end the long agony of uncertainty suffered by their families.
But Tehran refuses to give the signal. Iran's leaders appreciate that Israel's military strength is at least three times that of the British army, air force and navy. The trouble is they do not respect Israel's prime minister Ehud Olmert. They believe the Lebanon War fiasco has deprived him of international leverage for generating the political and military pressure to force Tehran's hand.
The end of the crisis removes the last obstacle to the Istanbul conference in April at which US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice will meet Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki for the first direct US-Iranian contact in three decades

Incoming Israeli chief of staff says terrorist military build-up in Gaza calls for rapid and urgent solution
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 31, 2007
At his first appearance before the Knesset foreign affairs and security committee, Wednesday, March 28, Lt.-Gen Gaby Ashkenazi did not specify what solution he had in mind, but it was presumed to be military. The chief of staff declared: What happened in the Lebanon war will not happen to the IDF again.
The general said one of his first priorities in the immediate future is to block the transfer of terrorist weapons and technology from the Gaza Strip to the West Bank.
debkafile's military sources estimate that Ashkenazi may be too late. The technology for the manufacture of missiles and weapons is already located in the West Bank. What remains to be done is to prevent the transfer of sophisticated hardware.

debkafile Analysis: The Hamas-dominated Palestinian government is product of Saudi-Iranian give-and-take over Lebanon and the Palestinians
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 24, 2007
Israel's strategic fiasco is rooted in the Olmert government's failure to pick up warning signals along the road. The outcome is a radicalized Palestinian government, with elements of which many world governments, including the US and Europe, are already keenly offering to work, regardless of the incoming Palestinian prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh's, vow to uphold "all forms of resistance" to the Jewish state.

debkafile: Israel's civil defense exercise Tuesday and Wednesday is more a charade than a genuine drill
Israel Goes through the Motions of a Home Front Drill
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 19, 2007
The warning sirens wailed across central and southern Israel Tuesday, March 20 purportedly to prepare the most densely populated parts of the country for unconventional terrorist strikes and mega-attacks, rocket strikes and missile attacks on three fronts. The official announcement promised the incorporation of lessons drawn from the Lebanon war when more than a million Israeli civilians were blasted by 4,000 Hizballah rockets for 33 days.
defenses against unconventional terrorist attacks or a missile blitz, supposedly drilled Tuesday and Wednesday, the government is sorely derelict - even to the old, nagging problem of providing protected areas for the schoolchildren of Sderot and its neighbors against Palestine missiles attacks, which have never stopped in six years.
Five Qassam missiles were fired from the Gaza Strip, Sunday, March 18, the day the Palestinian unity government was installed
The population of northern Israel is no better protected for the next war than they were for the last, despite the promises the prime minister, defense minister and other cabinet members scattered right and left.

New Palestinian government marks collapse of Israel's Middle East positions
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report March 18, 2007
The Hamas-Fatah government taking office Sunday, March 18, is more than a policy failure by prime minister Ehud Olmert and foreign minister Tzipi Livni; it is another milestone on the road to the collapse of Israel's Middle East positions at large, on a scale comparable to the setback to its deterrence from the mismanaged war against Hizballah last summer.
This fiasco is reflected in the horrified outcry across the board, from members of the Olmert government coalition and the opposition alike, as Israelis woke up Sunday, March 18, to face a hostile Palestinian government led by a terrorist organization, godfathered by Saudi Arabia, armed by Iran, and blessed by Western powers.
