Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu spent three hours with President Vladimir Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Tuesday, May, 14, trying to head off advanced Russian anti-air S-300 missile systems sales to Syria. Instead, the Russian leader issued a warning relating to Israel’s air strikes against Damascus on May 3 and May 5: "In this crucial period it is especially important to avoid any moves that can shake the situation," said Putin. He also indicated that heat should be directed on Washington to reverse its policy on Syria and Assad.

Moscow has removed the gloves in its defense of Syrian ruler Bashar Assad.  Wednesday, July 4, senior Russian official Ruslan Pukhov warned: “If the Syrian regime is changed by force or if Russia doesn't like the outcome, it most likely will respond by selling S-300s to Iran."  This threat gave substance to the hints thrown out by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his June 25 visit to Israel about breaking the UN arms embargo against Iran. debkafile’s military sources disclose that Israel has developed counter-measures for this advanced Russian missile.

Israel's security suffered a major setback on the eve of its homeland security exercise (starting Sunday, May 23) from three Obama administration concessions for buying Moscow's backing for UN Security Council sanctions against Iran. it deletes the embargo on such sophisticated weaponry as the Russian S-300 systems sought by Tehran for shooting down any US or Israel warplanes attacking its nuclear sites.
Israel has yet to protest this blow to Washington or Moscow.

While Russia backs the US on watered-down UN Security Council sanctions for Iran, debkafile's military sources report Iranian Revolutionary Guards crews are surreptitiously training at Russian bases for operating advanced S-300 interceptor-missile systems, which are capable of fending off a potential attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

After its softening by Russia and China, the new sanctions motion does not ban the consignment of this weapon to Iran.
