Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has leapt into the Syrian battle arena, undertaking to transform Assad’s loyal Alawite Shabbiha militia into a new corps, retrained and reorganized on the model of the elite Al Qods Brigades. More than 2,200 Iranian military instructors have so far been airlifted into Syria along with up-to-date weapons for the newly trained militiamen. At the project's end, Bashar Assad – if he survives that long – will have a new highly-trained force of 50-60,000 elite troops, nucleus of a Syrian Revolutionary Guards Corps.

In a phone call to the Kremlin Sunday, July 1, Syrian President Bashar Assad said he needed just two months to finish off the revolt against his regime. “My new military tactics are working,” he said, as his regime and the Syrian opposition rejected the UN-sponsored peace plan approved in Geneva Saturday. debkafile also reports exclusively that Assad’s "new tactics" consist of retiring the top army command and replacing it with Shabiha thugs armed with an unheard-of level of fire power. Damascus was alive with rumors Thursday, April 14 that President Bashar Assad and his family were preparing to flee to Saudi Arabia. They were, sparked by the discovery that several high-ranking Syrian officials and army officers were evacuating their families to Persian Gulf emirates. US officials also disclosed Iran was secretly helping Assad crack down on his own people.
