The WikiLeaks releases do not live up to their billing for fatally damaging US diplomacy and its international reputation. Some of the leaks, especially those vilifying Iran, raise questions as to whose interests they really serve.

Tehran sees the WikiLeaks disclosure of broad antipathy for Iran as deliberate American mischief-making rather than an assault on US diplomacy. Saudi and other Arab leaders shown hustling Washington to strike Iran's nuclear sites was bad enough. But, as DEBKA-Net-Weekly reports in its coming issue out Friday, Monday's attack on its top nuclear physicists in Tehran may be the last straw before Iran hits back.

Israel is not in a position to underestimate Iran and be surprised like the US was on September 11, 2001," said Military Intelligence Chief Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin in May, 2009.

WikiLeaks' 400,000 classified US documents on the 2004-2009 years of the Iraq War laid bare a catalogue of extreme abuse by Iraqi forces against fellow Iraqis and Iran's deep involvement in terrorist operations against Americans and Iraqis alike. The US is shown to have turned a blind eye to both. debkafile's analysts question the point of a war which replaces brutal Saddam Hussein with a Tehran-sponsored terrorist and gave Iran a springboard for spreading its domination.
