Day Three of Iraq War - March 21, 2003

March 22, 2003, 3:57 PM (GMT+02:00)

Allied forces are stopping for nothing as they race towards Baghdad, Friday, March 21. Unfazed by the first serious Iraqi resistance encountered on the outskirts of the Euphrates River town of Nassariyeh, the main body of the force pressed on regardless, leaving a unit behind to engage the Iraqi troops. Day Two of Iraq War - March 20, 2003

March 21, 2003, 6:32 PM (GMT+02:00)

Thursday morning, March 20, the Iraqi military moved onto the offensive against the allied troop buildup on the Kuwait-Iraqi frontier and Kuwait itself. At least two of the four were Scuds- one or two of which were shot down by US Patriot anti-missile batteries, as the sound of explosions heard in Kuwait City set off alarm sirens. There were no initial reports of unconventional warheads or casualties from the missile salvo.

US war commanders grabbed the element of surprise after all. While most analysts and forecasters predicted a mighty aerial-missile blitz over Baghdad as the war’s opener, the campaign began Wednesday, March 19 with a lighting advance by Marine forces into southern Iraq along the Shatt el Arb River towards the big naval base and town of Umm Qasr. Fighting alongside the Americans are two brigades of the British 1st Armored Division and naval vessels landing Marine units south of Basra. The first clash of the war occurred shortly after in the mouth of the Khawr al-Zubayr river, a few miles south of Umm Qasr.

Countdown to Iraq War Goes on

March 19, 2003, 11:02 AM (GMT+02:00)

Tuesday, March 18, Saddam’s eldest son rejected President George W. Bush’s ultimatum Monday night for the Iraqi ruler and his sons to go into exile within 48 hours or face “military conflict launched at a time of our choosing.” The loose presidential phrasing enabled the White House to consider advancing the date of the full-scale offensive against Iraq before the 48 hours expired – particularly after the brutal threat that accompanied Uday Hussein’s rejection. “The wives and mothers of those Americans who will fight us will cry blood, not tears,” he said. “They should not imagine that they will have a safe spot inside the land of Iraq or outside it.” Hussein’s son tauntingly urged Bush to leave his office in America with his family…”
