An al Qaeda Web site reports death of Abu Laith al-Libi, a senior field commander in Afghanistan

The site claimed he died as a “martyr” but provides no details. It is not clear if al-Libi was killed in a reported US Predator drone attack in Pakistan’s North Waziristan this week, which is said to have killed 13 al Qaeda terrorists – 7 Arabs and 6 Central Asians.
Western intelligence describes al-Libi as a senior field commander. Of Libyan descent, he was a key liaison between al Qaeda and Taliban. According to the Pakistani daily, The News, the reported US strike targeted al-Libi and another senior al Qaeda figure, Obaidah al Masri.
