Are US, Russia, Assad lining up against Iran in Syria?

The Trump-Pompeo steps against Iran, widely criticized as unrealistic, are a calculated strategy partnered by Israel, with Moscow’s partial hush hush support. DEBKA Weekly in its coming issue out next Friday, May 25, uncovers these under-the-radar steps in exclusive detail and outlines the respective roles, never before published, that Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, Binyamin Netanyahu and Bashar Assad are playing in the evolving drive to evict Iran from Syria. To join the list of regular subscribers to the unique DEBKA Weekly publication, click here.

If it is then I hope it’ll work as it’s likely to be bloodless with Russia involved as well. This has been an IRGC’s adventure and the normal Iranian people must be wondering why their countrymen are still in Syria and who pays the bills. It began with help for Assad and ended up looking permanent. Now with some “stability” appearing amongst this awful carnage it’s time for all foreigners to get out of Syria and let them rebuild their country.

With the right political and military cover I am sure our shared secular beliefs will win the day.

I am not buying this, Assad will never do so. although he is an Arab and not a Persian so backstabbing them would be OK.

The buy in is that the Alawites would never agree to a Lebanese Hizbullah society.

I thought Hezbollah was mostly Alawite..much in common with Syria than Iran which is Shia..I have never been able to reconcile why Alawites..which absorbed the concept of a xian trinty.most tolerant of sects..that dont even build mosques…and which was almost driven to extinction over a milennia..do not have more in common with their Hebrew cousins..Persecuted to extinction..would be a natural point to bring them together..Perhaps someone with no ax to grind can answer this..

Alawites have no allegiance to any religion, or people, but to their survival. They can prosper in the rebuilding of a secular government, Assad need Iran to go home, the Alawites can negotiate an end to the civil war.
