it’s dangerous to live in the past and ignore present dangers and opportunities.
the russian foothold in syria is vulnerable to two large neighbouring armies, turkey and israel. and the russians are very aware of this, and have gone out of their way not to start fights with either country, because it’s their own troops that are in the line of fire.
the iranians, on the other hand, want to open a new front against israel, and are very willing to sacrifice their proxies.
viewing the russians through the lens of czarist pogroms misses an opportunity to persuade the russians to control iran.

maybe next time, the iaf could try a little experiment: a pair of f-16s, on full afterburner, generate a very nasty wake vortex, probably enough to turn a little drone inside out. without firing a single shot.
