Exclusive: Iran shot missiles from Khuzestan, drones from W. Iraq at Saudi oil facilities
The Iranian attack on major Saudi oil infrastructure came from two locations, hence the confusion: DEBKAfile’s military and intelligence sources reveal that Summer cruise missiles were fired from Khuzestan in southern Iran and Avail 2 armed drones from Anbar in western Iraq. This was the conclusion reached by US and Saudi intelligence probes into Saturday’s devastating attack on the big Saudi oil refinery at Abqaiq and its Kurais oil field.
Our sources add that the Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, which staged the attack, fired altogether 17 missiles and drones, of which 12 missiles achieved direct hits on their targets and five drones missed.
Khuzestan, the source of the missiles, is Iran’s main oil heartland, while the drones came from a location some 200km from the big American Ayn al-Asad air base in Anbar province. A strip of desert was cleared by the pro-Iranian PMU Shiite militia ready for the operation, under the orders of Iran’s Al Qods chief Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
Last Christmas, President Donald Trump visited the air base, on his only visit to Iraq as president, and praised the advanced military equipment installed there as affording the US contingents full control of the region.
The Israeli government and military are becoming jittery over the delay in any Saudi or US response for the Iranian attack, which has already impacted the global energy market, fearing that if Tehran can get away with a major assault on one American ally, it may be encouraged to go for another one.
Israeli sources gave no credence to Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani’s assertion on Monday that the attack on Saudi oil facilities was a reciprocal Houthi operation for the kingdom’s attacks in Yemen, judging it to be another attempt to distance Tehran from responsibility and pretend it had nothing to do with the United States.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu too issued a statement on Monday, saying that Israel is prepared for the possibility of being drawn into any US-Iranian confrontation over a strike on a Saudi oil plant. “I am taking care of our security on a 360-degree basis, and I can tell you that we are well-prepared” for any Iranian provocation. Netanyahu spoke 24 hours before Israel’s national ballot in which he is running for re-election.

One thing is an absolute fact, and that is if you go to a 100 refineries, you will see that 100 of them have huge “No Smoking” signs. And the reason is that they contain vast oceans of highly flammable liquids and every surface everywhere is covered in leaked fuel — every complicated piping and tankage system has little leaks. Every valve, every joint, everything in a decades-old piping system in the middle of nowhere leaks a little bit. A valve put in in the 60’s in the Rubb al Khali desert will have a little drip.
So everything is coated in petroleum products. The ground is greasy and black with it. The air is heavy with the smell of it — hence the “No Smoking” signs. These places are more flammable than fireworks factories.
So if a little toy plane, too small and too plasticky and flying too low for the radar to catch, comes flying in with an explosive payload, it can make something go bang, which will then set fire to some of that huge store of flammables. 10 of them can make a real mess.

It is now possible for even a band of half-wild ISIS savages to swarm a Russian base with little drones. A refinery is obviously more of a sitting duck. It seems intuitive that if a Russian airbase can be hit by complete donkeys, then the World’s biggest refinery can be hit by Yemenis.
Maybe it’s just a vulnerability resulting from the new technology that has become universally available.

I don’t think anyone should even have a question about who was behind the attack on the Saudi oil installations. The Houthis claim the attack and they would neither conduct an attack on Saudi Arabia of that scale or claim responsibility without the permission of Iran or at the order of Iran. The Houthi are not independent actors.
The Intel is varied in its nature. Everything from the claim of responsibility to the physical evidence on the ground. There is also almost certainly signals intel and human intel sources.
Ultimate responsibility is not reasonably in dispute. The response is what is in question.
One other thing? If there will be a military attack in response, waiting for a few days is advisable.

If they damage Saudi Arabia’s ability to sell petroleum products the price of petroleum goes up. When the price of petroleum increases, the price which Iran can get for its oil goes up and there may be more countries willing to import oil despite the sanctions.
They also hope that Europe (in particular) will be hurt by the lack of oil and/or the increase in oil prices and do more to render the sanctions ineffective so that Iran doesn’t attack more oil installations. The use of the Soumar missile is important because it shows that this fairly long-range cruise missile is operational and can attack lots of targets – including oil installations throughout the region.
Also, if Iran can cause economic problems for Saudi Arabia then Saudi Arabia may have less in the way of resources to counter Iranian moves in the region. This is even more important as Iran’s economy suffers.
There’s actually more to it, but that should suffice.

If you look at the satellite photos of the 4 holes in the tanks and the polygonal retention pond to the right, the holes are in the wrong spot for it to have come from Iran or Iraq.
I found the plant in Google Maps and spinned it to line up with the holes in the tanks, aligned the map to point the holes straight up. The holes are on the NORTHWEST side of the tank. If you zoom out and drawa straight line from the holes in the tanks to the nearest country, it leads into the southern-most point of ISRAEL. It’s a false-flag. No way Iran would do something so obvious.
Any time Israel and the US need to retaliate it should be heavy handed. It might sting at first but it will benefit in the long run. ‘Fairness’ doesn’t exist in a street fight.
