Purges in Saudi Arabia: National Guard chief Prince Mutab sacked

DEBKAfile reports a series of purges in the upper ranks of the Saudi hierarchy, including National Guards chief Mutab bin Abdullah, son of the late king, who is replaced with Prince Khalid bin Ayyaf. The commanders of the air force and navy have also been fired.

Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman. who is also Saudi defense minister, has acted in the past year to curtail the powers of the National Guard, whose functions are protection of the royal house and the oil fields, and merge it with the regular army. Its budgets have been slashed and its autonomy for making arms purchases annulled.
