Iran’s deputy foreign minister Abbas Araghchi told the BBC Thursday that Iran’s presence in Syria was there to “fight terrorism. ” Israeli and US warnings about Iran’s intentions were “propaganda,” he said. Tehran’s alliance with Syria and Hizballah were aimed to “combat the hegemonic policies” of Israel. The situation with Syria, he called “very complicated” amid growing concern that a wider regional war could erupt. Araghchi denied that Iran had sent a drone into Israeli airspace from Syria, maintaining it belonged to the Syrian army. As for the nuclear accord, he accused President Donald Trump of undermining it and Iran’s economy by derogatory remarks, which “contributed” to the anti-government protests last month. “An atmosphere of uncertainty” deters big companies and banks from working with Iran,“ he claimed, and that is “a violation by the United States.”
