A Saudi teenage girl gains asylum in Canada

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18,  in flight from her family and heading for Australia, was stranded in Bangkok. When she was told to return to Kuwait where her family were waiting for her, she barricaded herself in her airport hotel room and refused to leave. The Saudi girl said she had renounced Islam, which is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia. On arrival in Canada, Saturday, she was introduced by Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland as “a very brave new Canadian,” having been granted asylum at the request of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
