AG Baharav-Miara rips into government judicial overhaul plan
Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara charged in a 120-page legal opinion paper that the plan to push an overhaul of the judicial system would give the government “unrestricted power” and distort the country’s democratic system of checks and balances among the branches of government. It would be “a sure recipe for abuses of human rights and government corruption,” she said.
In a second advisory, the attorney general demanded that PM Binyamin Netanyahu recuse himself from involvement in the judicial reform campaign in view of his own ongoing trial on corruption charges.
A statement from the prime minister’s office said the attorney-general’s opinion on his involvement was unacceptable and requested 14 days to provide a full response.
