Anger at Islamist terror propels general to Nigeria’s presidency

A majority vote threw out the incumbent president Goodluck Johnathan this week and replaced him with 72-year old former military dictator Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in Nigeria’s first power transfer by democratic vote. Goodluck Wednesday conceded defeat. Buhari ruled the country with an iron fist in his brief rule in the 1980s. He now says he is a belated convert to democracy. Buhari campaigned on a pledge to stamp out the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency in the north, carrying the electorate on his security ticket.
