Athens on high alert for Merkel visit

An estimated 7,000 police armed with water cannons and rooftop snipers are mobilized to deal with anti-austerity demonstrators ready to flood central Athens Tuesday midday when the German Chancellor Angela Merkel meets Prime Minister Antonis Samaris.
Greece has been given until Oct. 18 by the EU, IMF and ECB to accept further spending cuts and tax increase to gain its next urgently-needed bailout loan by the end of November.
