Australian army reserves called up to battle calamitous fires

For the first time in Australia, 3,000 army reservists were called up to battle the escalating bushfires as soaring temperatures (44 C) and high winds brought the threat to more populated areas. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said every possible capacity must be brought to bear as the wildfire disaster escalated to a new level. The flames have already claimed 23 lives, burned some 12.35 million acres of land and razed over 1,500 houses with no sign of abating.
