Austrian far-right candidate defeated in presidential election
Anti-immigration Freedom Party leader Norbert Hofer conceded defeat Sunday night to former Greens independent leader Alexander Van der Bellen at the end of Austria’s presidential election Sunday. This was a setback for the populist anti-establishment parties sweeping across Europe which hoped to capitalize on Donald Trump’s election in America and the Brexit vote in the UK. A projection based on 69 percent counted votes Sunday evening showed Van der Bellen with 53.3 percent and Hofer 46.7 percent.
