Avigdor Lieberman quits as foreign minister

Avigdor Lieberman stepped down Monday as foreign minister. He also withdrew his candidacy for the post in Binyamin Netanyahu’s next government, by taking his party, Yisrael Beitenu, out of ongoing coalition talks and opting for the opposition. He accused Netanyahu of “opportunism” and betraying the principles of the national camp, as well as willing to revoke legislation achieved by the outgoing cabinet. According to Lieberman, the prime minister will invite Labor Party chairman Yitzhak Herzog to join the next cabinet. Moments after the announcement, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzahi Hanegbi (Likud) put forward his candidacy for the ministerial post.
