Belgian TV: Two dead, one arrested in police counter-terrorism raid
Two people were killed, one arrested in a counter-terrorist raid in the eastern Belgian town of Verviers, during a broad special forces and police operation conducted in 10 apartments in Brussels and Verviers Thursday, Jan. 15. The Belgian federal prosecutors said the operation was a preventive one, acting on information that operational cells made up of people who came back from Syria were actively planning a terrorist attack “on a grand scale” in Belgium.
They opened fire on police coming to search their houses before they were “neutralized.” One police source said: “We have averted a Belgian Charlie Hebdo.” The terror alert in Belgium has been elevated from three to four.
