Bill Clinton arrives in Israel, pays last respects to Peres at Knesset

Former US President Bill Clinton arrived in Israel on Thursday morning and went directly to the Knesset in Jerusalem where he paid his last respects to Israel's ninth president, Shimon Peres, whose body was lying in state outside the parliament ahead of the funeral on Friday.
The flag-covered casket bearing the body of Peres, who died Wednesday morning at the age of 93, was brought to the Knesset in a convoy including motorcycle policemen, and handed over to members of the Knesset guard who placed it on a podium in the plaza.
A ceremony was then held in which President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and opposition chairman Yitzhak Hertzog laid wreaths on the casket. The public was permitted to walk past the casket and pay their last respects to Peres until 11:00 pm.
