Bolton justifies Israeli strikes on Iranian missile deliveries in Syria
US National Security Adviser John Bolton told a news conference in Tel Aviv on Wednesday that Israel’s attacks in Syria against Iranian missile shipments were taken in self-defense and therefore legitimate. According to Bolton, the US will do “other things” to put pressure on Iran, beyond economic sanctions. He said that Washington understands “the Israeli claim that it has annexed the Golan Heights” but “there’s no change in the US position for now.” He repeated President Donald Trump’s assertion that after Israel’s key claim to Jerusalem was met, it was up to Israel to meet the Palestinians’ halfway on their demands. Bolton called UNWRA “a failed mechanism.” It violates international law on the status of refugees and is “the only one in history based on the assumption that refugee status is hereditary.” US steps to reduce funding were long overdue, he said.
