“There is no force that can shake the foundation of this great nation,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday in a speech commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party’s rule. He pledged to “maintain long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao” while staying committed to the strategy of peaceful reunification and ’One Country, Two Systems,” as protests against Beijing continued in Hong Kong.
The anniversary was marked with splendid pageantry and a huge military parade, with some 15,000 personnel taking part and 160 aircraft and 580 pieces of military equipment showcased, including drones and missiles. The parade ended with the unveiling of the Dongfen 41, a nuclear-capable missile, which analysts said could reach the US in 30 minutes. The DF41 is described as China’s next generation ICBM, with an estimated range of 12,000-15,000km and the capacity to carry a payload of 10 warheads to any point in the United States.
