Coronavirus infection continues to surge in Israel
Active coronavirus infections jumped from Monday night by 179 to 2,620 out of the 18,049 cases confirmed since the first outbreak in February. The death toll was unchanged at 298 as was the number of 23 on ventilators. Tel Aviv for the first time topped the new infection chart followed by Jerusalem. Because of the new spike – the highest since mid-April – the Coronavirus Ministerial Committee decided on Monday to delay by another week the easing of restrictions, specifically for the train service and entertainment, including movies and theater shows, while approving up to 250 guests at open-air weddings.
The Education Ministry reopened scores of schools held in quarantine since last month following the confirmation of covid-19 cases among staff and/or pupils. Their number at present stands at 385 and 17,605 remain in enforced isolation.
