Damning IAEA report due on expanding Iranian nuclear program
Diplomats in Vienna report that the new UN atomic energy report due Thursday or Friday will show how Tehran is boosting uranium enrichment on the way to obtaining a nuclear arsenal. It will be circulated as Iran seeks to burnish its image with the slick publicity surrounding the Non-Aligned Summit taking place in Tehran this week. Fifty nations are attending out of NAM’s 120 members – many represented by low-tier officials.
Since the last IAEA report in May, Iran has installed 1,000 new centrifuges at the fortified Fordo bunker plant, of which 700 are already working there to enrich uranium up to 20 percent grade. The report will say there is no longer any point in sending IAEA monitors to the Parchin military site, which Tehran has refused for eight months, because the site has been sanitized to erase any evidence of the nuclear weapons explosives testing suspected to have taken place there.
