David Bitan resigns as government coalition chairman

The government coalition’s chairman, David Bitan of Likud, on Wednesday resigned his position, though not his parliamentary seat, to focus on his defense against ongoing police probes into bribe-taking allegations during his time as deputy mayor of Rishon LeZion. Bitan has been a stalwart champion of Binyamin Netanyahu in the corruption probes running against the prime minister for two years, none of which have so far ended in indictments.
