Deadline passes with fate of ISIS hostage unclear
The deadline for the swap at the Turkish border of a Jordanian pilot and an Al Qaeda female terrorist passed at sunset Thursday without it taking place. Jordan was ready to hand over attempted suicide bomber Sajida al-Rishawi, who is on death row for a deadly attack on an Amman hotel, for the pilot, Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh, captured by ISIS in Syria last December – but then demanded proof he was alive.
A photo of the pilot was earlier held by the Japanese hostage Kenji Goto Jogo, with the message that the lieutenant would be executed immediately if the deadline was not kept. Jogo said nothing about his own fate. Amman is coordinating with Tokyo in the effort to secure both hostages.
