DEBKAfile Exclusive: US secretly removes its forces from northern Sinai
The US military secretly withdrew about 100 of its officers and enlisted men who had been serving in the multinational peacekeeping force in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula. This is reported by DEBKAfile's military sources.
US sources refused to specify the current location of the troops. The American force was withdrawn from El Gorah base, located next to the town of Sheikh Zuweid, after the facility was shelled by forces from the ISIS affiliate in the Sinai. It marked the first time for US troops in the Sinai to be attacked by the terrorist organization.
Our sources report that the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, travelled to Cairo and met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Saturday to coordinate the removal of the troops.
DEBKAfile's sources report that Egypt and Israel must now deal with the withdrawal as an established fact. Cairo and Jerusalem had previously expressed opposition to such a move.
