Donald Trump indicted, 1st ex-president to face charges

A Manhattan grand jury has indicted former President Donald Trump after years of investigation into his political and personal business dealings. The nature of the charges is unclear since the indictment is under seal. They include payments made during his 2016 campaign to a porn star to silence claims of an encounter. Prosecutors expect Trump to surrender early next week. It is unclear how prison time, if imposed, would legally affect his 2024 bid to retake the White House.

Trump denied any wrongdoing and assailed the indictment as unprecedented “political persecution”  initiated by the “extreme left.” His lawyers vowed to “vigorously fight this political persecution in court.”
