Edelstein: Knesset immunity committee now would be “a bad mistake”
Knesset Speaker Yulli Edelstein said on Sunday that convening a Knesset committee to debate Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s application for immunity from prosecution would be a bad mistake. It would be “a jungle for unbridled election propaganda, a quasi-judicial body conducting a toxic procedure, to which I refuse to lend a hand,” he said. “I therefore disagree with the opinion offered by the Knesset Legal Adviser, Eyal Yinon, that I am obliged to convene the committee,” the Speaker said. While rejecting the threat by the Kahol Lavan opposition party to sack him as Speaker if he failed to convene the committee, he refrained from stating his decision. He has a fortnight to make a decision.
