Egyptian ex-general to run against President El-Sisi in March election
Former military chief of staff, Sami Anan, led the Egyptian military from 2005 to 2012 as part of the military junta which ruled the country after President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in the 2011 upheaval. The next president, Muhammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, forced him into retirement in 2012. He then formed the Arabism Egypt Party, at the head of which he plans to contest President Abdel-Fatteh El-Sisi, his former colleague, in March.
