Erdogan scrapes through runoff to start third decade as Turkey’s president
Recep Tayyip Erdogan clinched another five years as president on top of his two decades in the runoff of Turkey’s election. While claiming a resounding victory, Erdogan won just 52pc of the vote in the second round (less than half in the first round) against Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who charged him with unfairly mobilizing all the means of state against him. Erdogan still barely got by in the face of mass criticism of his performance in the economy, against a devastating earthquake and his authoritarian rule.
