EXCLUSIVE: Saudis foil Hamas leader’s relocation to Qatar

Senior members of the Saudi royal house recently used intelligence back channels to Egyptian President Abdul-Fatteh El-Sisi for a request not to let Hamas’ newly-elected political chief Ismail Haniyeh travel from the Gaza Strip via Cairo to Doha. Haniyeh had decided to settle with his family in Qatar, where he would be more comfortable than in Gaza City and free to travel around the Arab world. DEBKAfile’s exclusive sources, which reveal this, add that El-Sisi acceded to the Saudi request. So Haniyeh stays in Gaza until Cairo and Riyadh decide otherwise.
