FBI chief confirms probe of any Trump associates’ collusion with Russia
FBI Director James Comey confirmed three investigations were ongoing when he testified before the House Intelligence Committee Monday. They were: possible links between Trump associates and Russia during the 2016 election campaign; Russian interference in the campaign to hurt Hillary Clinton – and what Comey called the logical flip side, which was to help her opponent, Trump – as part of Moscow’s campaign to undermine faith in the American democracy, and the leaks of classified information by unnamed intelligence sources. The FBI Director appeared along with National Security Director Michael Rogers
In his opening statement, Comey said: “I’ve been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. That includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts.”
The FBI director said he had no evidence to support the president’s claim of wiretapping of Trump Tower by his predecessor.
