Multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein, 66, accused of sex trafficking minors, was found unconscious in his cell from an apparent suicide early Saturday at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in NYC. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Law enforcement officials said that the initial call to the jail was cardiac arrest. Several reports claimed that he hanged himself. An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death. Two weeks ago, Epstein was placed on suicide watch after he was found close to unconsciousness in his cell with neck injuries. It was not clear whether they were self-inflicted or the result of an assault. At the time of his death, the suicide watch had been removed.
On Friday, 2,000 documents were unsealed revealing dozens of high-profile names in connection with the charges for which he was facing his second trial. Epstein’s death raises questions about the safety of key prison inmates.
