First breakthrough Egyptian victory over ISIS in Sinai

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the Egyptian Third Army has achieved a major breakthrough in its long battle against the ISIS-affiliated terrorists groups plaguing Sinai with complete control for the first time over the Islamists’ cave headquarters in the central Halal mountain range. Military spokesperson Tamer al-Refai revealed that the Egyptian army divided into nine fighting groups were able to comb through the lofty the cave network. They fought their way through 24 caves containing huge stores of ammunition and weapons, 29 booby-trapped motorbikes, stores of bombs and fuel, three vehicles with guns attached, wireless telecommunications devices and drugs. The operation lasted six consecutive days and left 18 jihadists dead and 31 injured. The spokesman gave no information on Egyptian casualties.
