First report: Man shot attacking police near Notre Dame, Paris

A man with a hammer assaulted a police officer near Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. He was shot and injured by officers on duty at the site. The approximately 2000 people inside the cathedral were asked to sit down in the aisles and wait until the situation is calm. Crowds were asked to stay away. A witness inside the cathedral reported: ‘We were just told that the doors will remain locked until the police tell us otherwise. We have no idea what’s happening.’ They were later told to sit down and raise their hands. Notre Dame has 13.6million visitors a year and is the most popular tourist attraction in France.
