First US emissary to Cairo after military coup
US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns will visit Egypt this week to meet members of “the interim government, civil society and the business community,” the State Department said Sunday. There was no indication whether he would meet Gen. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in the first visit to Cairo by a senior US official since the coup which overthrew Mohamed Morsi. The statement said only that in his meetings, Burns would “underscore US support for the Egyptian people, an end to all violence, and a transition leading to an inclusive, democratically elected civilian government.”
