Five Argentine friends and a Belgian among 8 fatalities in Manhattan terror attack

Sayfullo Saipov, who Tuesday murdered eight people and injured eleven on Lower Manhattan’s Hudson River pathway, perpetrated the deadliest terrorist attack on the city since Al Qaeda’s 9/11 atrocity which killed nearly 3,000 people 16 years ago. He is reported to have arrived in the US from Uzbekistan in 2010 as a legal resident. Born 29 years ago, he is believed to have lived in Ohio, Florida and New Jersey since obtaining a green card that enabled him to work in the US. He is thought to be married with three children. According to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, he acted alone and not as part of a wider plot. Car-share service Uber confirmed Saipov had been working for them and had passed its background checks.  He is under arrest and recovering in hospital from police bullet wounds.
The five Argentines killed in his truck attack were part of a group of friends celebrating the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation. A Belgian citizen was also among the dead victims.
