Pakistan’s official elections have not been released, but Imran Khan, 65, has a commanding lead according to projections and will be his country’s next prime minister. The vote was marred by allegations of fraud and violence. Khan, a former cricketer star turned politician, promised a “new” Pakistan amid a crumbling economy and raging militancy. It is not yet clear whether his Tehreek-e-Insaf party, PTI, will have a majority or have to form a coalition government. There are concerns that disgruntled losers could destabilize government or that the military will step in after dominating Pakistan for most of its independent existence.
